The Representative Democracy Data Archive (REPDEM)

REPDEM presents the comparative data collection efforts undertaken by various research and data infrastructure projects on political institutions, political parties, cabinets and governments in Europe.

As a world-leading database for research on the competition for government in Europe, the archive contains unique data on governments, parliaments, political parties, length of government formation periods, bargain rounds, as well as procedures and mechanism for intra-coalition governance, etc.

The latest updates were made in the research infrastructure project Party Government in Europe Database (PAGED). PAGED builds on ERDDA’s previous international and comparative projects on European parliamentary democracy.

The Data

Party Government in Europe Database (PAGED) is a research infrastructure project that aims to build a state-of-the-art database for comparative coalition research on political institutions, political parties, parliaments and governments. This project builds on the previous international and comparative projects on European parliamentary democracy that are available on REPDEM's website (https://repdem.org) and concern key issues of todays representative democracy namely delegation, accountability, government formation, governance and government dissolution.

Data preparation in the Demscore infrastructure

The following section provides an overview of the data sources provided by REPDEM and how they are prepared and included in Demscore.

Variables from REPDEM datasets in Demscore are available in their original form in the datasets’ respective Output Units. The figure below shows the Output Unit we identified for REPDEM.

The REPDEM Cabinet-Date, Cabinet-Month, Cabinet-Quarter and Cabinet-Year Output Units express the data from the REPDEM PAGED Datasets on different levels of analysis, and the user can choose whichever format best suits their analysis.

These datasets are also aggregated to a Country-Year level in order to make the original data available in other Modules' formats. In addition to that, REPDEM provides data on individual parties in the REPDEM Party datasets, as well as on potential coalition compositions for each cabinet in the dataset on Potential Coalitions.
